In June we took our vacation and went back over to Europe on another motorcycle tour with Bosenberg Motorcycle Excursions. This time we took 3 friends from our motorcycle chapter and toured the Swiss Alps and Italian Dolomites. It was the same tour we took in 1999 and it was great! We had super weather and the scenery and food is always exceptional, especially when shared with friends. This year we each rented the equivalent of a Honda ST1300.
Our tour started in Frankfurt, Germany. From there we travel down through the Black Forest and into Switzerland. The Swiss Alps are gorgeous and there was plenty of snow at the top. The mountain passes are great for riding a motorcycle with lots of hairpin curves. Then we travelled on to northern Italy and stayed in the mountains (dolomites). This is the first we’ve been able to view the dolomites which are huge rock pedestals--when we were there in 1999 is was raining. They remind me of the Canadian Rockies, huge and massive.
Then we turn back north and head for Austria. There are many open ranges in Europe and we often came across horses, cows, sheep and yaks in or by the roadway. As the trip draws to an end we are back to Germany to fly home. But not without a stop in the great walled city of Rothenburg to walk the wall and do some shopping.
Overall we put on 3500 kilometers in 14 days. Gas averaged out to be equivalent to $9. per gallon. We arrived early before the tour actually started and rented our bikes. Our extra days we spent travelling up the Rhine River, visiting the Burg Rheinfels Castle and taking in the scenery along the Mosel River.
